On July 15, 1939, the crew of Coast Guard aircraft V-164, a Hall PH-2 flying boat, had just picked up a pneumonia stricken seaman, George Priest, off the ketch Atlantis 150 miles southeast of New York City. According to witnesses, as the seaplane began its takeoff run, an explosion ripped through the craft and it slammed into the sea. LT. Clemmer in command of the aircraft, AP Radan who was the pilot/navigator, and George T. Priest died in the crash. The other five crewman of the aircraft managed to escape the sinking wreckage and were picked up by a boat from the Atlantis.
