CG-52301 “Triumph”

On 12 January 1961, CG 52301 “Triumph”, stationed at Point Adams Life Boat Station, OR, was called out to assist Coast Guard vessels on scene with a 38-foot crab boat that lost its rudder near the breakers off Peacock Spit. Onboard were BM1 John Culp, BM2 John Hoban, SNBM Ralph Mace, EN3 Joseph Petrin, SN Gordon Sussex and one other crewman. Once on scene, the Triumph took the disabled vessel in tow and shortly thereafter, a heavy breaker hit the Triumph which parted the tow line and capsized the Coast Guard vessel. The crew of the disabled vessel was able to rescue only one of the six crewmen, but during the course of the day, also capsized and sank. Various Coast Guard aircraft, vessels, and beach patrols looked for the lost crew of the Coast Guard and disabled vessel to no avail. Only one Coast Guard crewmen survived.
