CG-214341

On March 23, 2001, CG-214341, a 22-foot inflatable, got underway from USCG Station Niagara to conduct a law enforcement mission in the Niagara River for the purpose of interdicting illegal migrants. A three-person boat crew and one break-in crew member were on board the vessel. After entering Lake Ontario, the boat experienced steep waves from the north and near freezing air and water temperatures. Shortly before 2000 on the return trip to the Niagara River, the boat overtook a wave, surfed down the front of that wave, and buried the bow in the backside of another wave. The vessel then slowly rolled over and capsized to starboard, forcing all four crew members to abandon the vessel.

The Wilson, NY Fire Department recovered the USCG crewmen at 0027 on Saturday, March 24. Two were in cardiac arrest and subsequently perished despite the best efforts of EMS personnel to re-warm and resuscitate them. The remaining two crewmen recovered and later returned to duty.
