On January 7, 1982, CG-1420, a Sikorsky HH-52A Seaguard helicopter, responded from Air Station Barbers Point, HI to an early morning distress call from a 74-foot fishing vessel sinking in stormy weather off the island of Moloka’i. Watchstanders lost radio contact with aircraft shortly after takeoff and a subsequent search discovered its wreckage on steep ridge in Moloka’i’s Wailau Valley. The entire aircrew perished in the crash.
