On August 7, 1981, while performing a night hoist to a distressed fishing vessel in heavy weather off the Alaskan coast near Prince William Sound, CG-1471, a Sikorsky HH-3F Pelican helicopter, lost control and crashed when its tail rotor contacted the peak of a 15 foot wave. All members of the Kodiak based aircrew lost their lives.
