USCGC Sedge (1964)

Two Coast Guardsmen were presumed drowned after an easterly gale swamped and sank their 24 foot boat in lower Cook Inlet off Kalgin Island, Alaska on November 22, 1964. Listed as missing were Engineman Second Class Raymond C. Frye Jr., 25, of Washington, DC, and Seaman Donald P. Law, 24, of North Hollywood, CA. Two other Coast Guardsmen embarked on the same vessel were rescued.

The boat was en route from USCGC Sedge to service the Kalgin Island Light on the northeast tip of the island when an unusually large swell apparently caused the boat to swamp. Kalgin Iand is about 75 miles southwest of Anchorage. Rescue operations saved two men and the two listed as missing were sighted unconscious in the water. While attempting to recover them, they slipped out of their lifejackets and sank. USCGC Sedge, a Coast Guard amphibious plane from Kodiak, and an Elmendorf Air Force Base helicopter searched for the men to no avail.
