On December 7, 1992, SA Robert G. Hess III, 22, of NJ, fell from the flying bridge of USCGC Firebush to its signal deck. Fellow crewmen performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for 45 minutes before Hess was flown to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. The Firebush is a 180-foot buoy tender homeported at Kodiak and was undergoing annual training south of Honolulu when the accident occurred.
