On September 21, 1993, twenty-year-old Seaman Michael O’Neil was one of two U.S. Coast Guardsmen responding to a distress call from the tug Duke Luedtke, which reported taking on water during a voyage of Lake Erie from West Harbor to Ashtabula, OH. O’Neil was below deck when the tugboat capsized and sank off Avon Lake. O’Neil lost his life when he became trapped within the engine room.
