On April 3, 1942, while on an Anti Submarine Warfare patrol off Salem, Massachusetts, Coast Guard aircraft 5777, a Vought OS2U-3 Kingfisher, was presumed to have struck the water, possibly during an attack on a German U-boat. When the aircraft was reported overdue, a search was organized. A wingtip was eventually recovered but no sign of the crew or any other wreckage was found.
