During the Vietnam War USCGC Point Welcome was assigned to Division 12 of Squadron One based in Danang, Vietnam. On August 11, 1966 the cutter was patrolling the mouth of the Cua Viet River three-quarters of a mile south of the 17th parallel when she received fire from three the U.S. Air Force aircraft. Her commanding officer, LTJG David Brostrom, along with EN2 Jerry Phillips were killed in this friendly fire incident.
